Celebrant at a naming ceremony with the parents and baby

NAMING CEREMONIES

Naming ceremonies are a non-religious way
to celebrate the naming of your child

What is a naming ceremony?

A naming ceremony pre-dates most religious ceremonies as it was historically a way of a new child being accepted and introduced into the community.

A naming ceremony differs from a religious equivalent.  A Christening or Baptism focuses on the the relationship between the child and the church, whereas a naming ceremony focuses on the relationship of the child with their parents.

What happens in a naming ceremony?

The main purpose of the ceremony is to announce the name of your child to your guests.  Everyone might know the name already, but if not, we can plan for a 'big reveal' towards the middle of the ceremony.

The first section can talk about your journey as parents in getting to this point, and how your parenthood is going so far!

If you have other children, you may wish to add symbolic actions that involve them too, such as a candle lighting or sand blending that symbolises the coming together of the larger family.

How can I get family involved?

In a religious ceremony, the involvement of godparents can be a special moment.  In a naming ceremony, you can refer to these people as mentors, or protectors, or even s'parents!

You can involve them in the ceremony with symbolic actions that show how much you value them being involved in your child's life.

What if you're too busy to plan it?

Prices for the writing and delivery of a bepoke naming ceremony start at £300.  However, if you really like the idea of a naming ceremony, but don't have the time to plan every aspect, I can be of assistance.

For an extra fee I can design invitations, order of service books, and I can even let your friends and family know all the details for you! Get in touch to discuss your specific needs for your child's naming ceremony.

Get in touch

Send me a message with your ceremony date, and if I'm free we can have initial video or audio call to have a chat about what your vision is.

Let's meet up

Time to meet for a coffee, or visit your venue to go through the finer details.  This is when I'll get to know you and your baby.  We can then talk about the vision you have for your child's naming ceremony

Script and ceremony

Once I've written the script, I'll send you a draft and we can work on it together.  After any revisions, the only thing left to do is to deliver the ceremony on your big day!!
